Step-By-Step Ritual

Make sure you have all your ingredients before you begin the steps below. If you draw your circle and then get up, the circle has been broken and you'll have to redraw it. Take time to gather everything and read over the steps before beginning.

  1. Start by cleansing your space. Smoke cleanse by using incense; go counterclockwise to banish stagnant energy.

  2. Create a salt circle and a 5-pointed star. Different ways to do this:

    1. (pictured above) I like to pour out a pile of salt, then smooth it out (you can use a piece of cardboard for this). Then, draw a 5-pointed star in the center as shown above (I use the end of a pencil, but your finger works just fine).

    2. Make a 5-pointed star out of salt.

    3. Draw a salt ring around your space (like on your desk, the ground or yourself). Dip your finger in water, and lightly draw a 5-pointed star inside the circle.

    4. Circle your ritual candles (the purple and white candle) in salt. In the air, draw a 5-pointed star.

  1. Open the Circle (5 minutes). Call in the five elements (spirit, water, fire, earth, and air).

    1. As pictured above, place the items on the correct point:

    2. Water: place your small bowl, vial, cup, or drop of water. Say, "Spirits of water, I call upon thee, be with me now."

    3. Fire: place your tealight candle. Light it. Say, "Spirits of fire, I call upon thee, be with me now."

    4. Earth: place your crystal (stone, soil, etc). Say, "Spirits of earth, I call upon thee, be with me now."

    5. Air: place your incense and light it. Lightly blow out the flame. Say, "Spirits of air, I call upon thee, be with me now."

    6. Spirit: place the item you chose to represent you at the top point and say, "Spirit that flows through all things, unseen and eternal, be with me now."

  2. Release and Reflect. Light the purple candle in the center. Take a moment of silence. Write down one thing you are ready to release. If you have a fire-safe bowl or plate, burn the paper. If you don't, tear the paper. Say: "I release what no longer serves me. I honor this space I now make for growth.

  3. Set Intentions. Light the white candle in the center. Write an intention or desire. Fold the paper and speak it aloud. "I plant this intention under the dark moon's gaze. May it grow strong with the waxing light." You can bury the paper after the ritual or place it on your altar/witch space/by your bed, etc.

  4. Meditate. Sit quietly while the candles burn. What feelings, images, or messages are appearing? Write them down. Thinking about the intentions you want to set for this new phase.

  5. Close the circle. Thank each element and spirit. Snuff the candles if they didn't burn all the way. Ground yourself with water, food, or touch. You can celebrate the new moon by leaving out a jar or cup of water to create new moon water, journal your feelings, wants, and desires, or cozy up in your bed watching your favorite movie or listening to music.

If you plan on participating, consider taking a photo of your ritual space and posting it in the coven chat!
