What are Sigils and How Do You Use Them?

ree

Hello, beautiful souls and fellow witches! This is my first blog post, so bare with me as I maneuver this new hobby.

Today, I want to share one of the most impactful forms of magic and a personal favorite: sigils. If you're new to witchcraft, you may not have heard of sigils yet, or maybe the word has been bouncing around your world for a while now. If you're just beginning your path or if you're looking for a way to deepen your spellwork with a more personal touch, then sigil magic is for you!

What Is a Sigil?

A sigil seems complicated, but in reality, they're very simple to understand. It's something you create that represents your intentions or desires. It gives those things a physical form. It condenses your energy into one small, enchanted design.

The word "sigil" comes from the Latin sigillum, meaning "seal," and in magical traditions, it's used to imprint your desire into the universe.

In modern witchcraft, sigils are often drawn, charged, and released as part of a spell or ritual. It's a way to send your energy out into the universe.

How to Create a Sigil

As I mentioned, a sigil is something you create. There is no wrong or right way to create one. Many witches use a wheel with numbers and letters inside, while others use symbols they create by manipulating letters and words.

Here is my sigil key. Feel free to use it as your own, edit it, or completely scrap it and make your own!

To create a sigil:

  1. Write a present-tense message onto a piece of paper. This message should be a statement of your intention.

    1. Example: If you're doing a protection spell, you may write "I am protected," as if it already happened.

  2. (Optional) This is my personal method. Remove the vowels and any repeating letters.

    1. Example: "I am protected" is now "MPRCTD"

  3. Use those letters to design a symbol. I like to circle the first letter on the wheel, M. Then, I will draw a line to the next letter, P, then the next, R, and so on. You can do this however you want. There is no wrong or right way.

  4. Refine your sigil. Once you have your symbol, you can simplify it, leave it as is, or stylize is however you want. I usually use the symbol that is created just by drawing lines to each letter.

Charging and Activating Your Sigil

Once your sigil has been created, it needs to be charged with your energy. This is what makes it "wake up" and start to work.

Charging a sigil isn't complicated. There are many methods to this; you can meditate on it, hold it while focusing your intention, draw it onto a candle and light it, burn it during a spell, etc. Like I've said three times now: there is no wrong or right way.

Your magic doesn't have to include sigils. Your magic doesn't have to look like anyone else's. Sigils are powerful because they're personal. They carry your handwriting, focus, energy, and intent. Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, trust that your magic is beautiful just as it is.

And remember, the power isn't in the pen or the ink or even the way you draw it. It's in you.

Blessed Be.
