How to Start Your First Grimoire

So, you’re ready to start your first grimoire, but maybe you’re staring at a blank page thinking, Where do I even begin? Don’t worry. Every witch starts somewhere, and your grimoire doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be yours.

A grimoire is a magical book that holds your personal practice. It can be digital or handwritten, chaotic or organized, messy or aesthetic. There’s no wrong way to create one, but there are a few helpful tips that can make starting a lot easier.

You Don’t Have to Be an Expert

You don’t need years of experience or a perfectly organized system to start. You don’t even need fancy tools. Your grimoire doesn’t have to be beautiful, aesthetic, or filled with ancient knowledge. It just has to be yours, messy pages and all.

What matters most is that it reflects your path. It’s a place to be honest, intuitive, and creative. And the best way to start… is to start.

What to Include

There’s no rulebook, but most grimoires include things like spells, moon phase notes, candle color meanings, herbal guides, crystal guides, candle colors, deity work, and much more. You might also record your tarot readings, dreams, or experiences during rituals.

Start with what’s calling to you. If you’re drawn to moon magic right now, begin there. If you’ve been working with herbs or oils, start documenting what you’re learning and noticing. Let it unfold naturally, page by page, just like your practice.

That First Page

The first page can feel intimidating. I get it, you want it to be meaningful, but you also don’t want to mess it up. The truth is: it doesn’t have to be perfect. You could begin with a blessing, an intention, a quote that inspires you, or a simple note like “This is my journey.”

Physical or Digital?

Some witches love the feel of pen on paper, lighting a candle, sitting down with tea, and writing out a ritual by hand. Others prefer the flexibility and organization of a digital grimoire that can be edited, reorganized, and accessed anywhere.
